PC Peekers

I went to the eye doctor this morning with my usual list of complaints, dry gritty eyes, eye strain and a crick in my neck and shoulders from having to crank my chin up in the air to view my computer screen.  Cursed progressive lenses.  So after my yearly exam and only a slight change, my doctor recommended a couple of options for me.  One is “office glasses”.  These are separate glasses that are made for wearing while working on the computer.  The drawback, you have to change them out with your normal glasses – back and forth, back and forth.  But definitely an option.

Then the lovely lady in the optical department suggested PC Peekers.  Whaaaaat??   I was skeptical when she pulled out these funny little glasses and told me to pop them inside my glasses.  ??   Strangest things ever…. but I did what she said and HOLY COW I could see the paper she was holding at computer height through the TOP of my glasses.  I didn’t have to crank my chin up at all!  And they only cost $20!  I was sold.  $20 vs the cost of another whole set of frames and lenses, they were certainly worth a try.  I’m wearing them right now!  They take a little bit of getting used to, but I just know my neck and shoulders are going to thank me.

If you’re suffering from neck and shoulder hunch from having to view your computer screen through the very bottom of your glasses, I encourage you to give PC Peekers a try.  I got mine from Newton Vision Center in Newton, but I think they’re sold in a lot of stores as well as online.    Here’s their website:    PC  Peekers

And here are my awesome little Peeks. :)  They are a little odd looking.  My eyes are so irritated and tired right now, I’m going to reserve judgment for a couple of weeks, but I’ll be sure and report back!

I’ve no doubt that Kelly will tease me relentlessly about these. :)

Joscelyn (6 months)

Check out little Miss Joscelyn!  Already 6 months old!   Last time I saw her she was just an itty bitty newborn.  Love her big caramel-colored eyes and cute little lips…

So, shooting indoors has always been just a little bit out of my comfort zone.  I have to push myself to practice and get better when I can.  I’ve also shied away from high ISOs.  Not a big fan of grain.  But, what I’m discovering is that I kind of like a little bit of grain.  It gives a depth and realness to a photograph.  More like old film pictures vs. the smooth digital pictures of today.

Josceyln’s mommy was gracious enough to let me come play, take some pics of her adorable little girl, all the while working on my indoor shooting skills.   Josceyln had me cracking up.  She would be all smiles, until I ducked behind the camera to snap a pic.    She would go from a smile to no smile in a split second.    I need to invest in one of those cute little playful critters that go around the camera lens to keep a baby’s attention!    All these images were taken inside with a small window light and a big reflector.   Most of the ISO ratings were 1250!  Go me!! :)

Check out the many faces of Joscelyn.   So cute!

Back In The Saddle :)

It was great to get my camera out today.  It’s been a few weeks.  And although I enjoyed the time away, it’s good to be back.

I spent the morning with this little cutie.  Check out how much she’s grown in 6 months! :)

sarah hawkins - what a cutie!

NEW! The SKP “What Is It?” Contest

One of the skills I’d like to improve on this year is macro photography.  There’s a definite knack to getting a gorgeous macro photo and I am determined to master that knack!  So, I thought it might be kind of fun to have a little contest while I learn!  :)

Once a month I will post one photo.   You guys will have THREE DAYS to try and figure out what it is.  The first one to guess properly will win a  prize!  This month’s prize is a $10 gift card to Starbucks, cause who doesn’t love the green mermaid?

Post your answers in the comments below.  Be sure and include your email so I can get in touch with you if you win!

The first one is kinda easy, so be quick to comment!

Good Luck!  :)

The winner will be announced on Sunday, January 15, 2012.

Shawn Robbins - A cheese Grater

Sandy - Honestly, I don’t know if it’s a grater or a zester…. but I’ll give it to yah! Obviously, I’m going to have to make this harder!! lol

Angelika Johnson - I knew right away…you WILL have to make them harder!

Tammy Chavies - Okay, I will admit I had NO idea!!! I really tried too. If this gets harder I am out! :)

Sandy - I’m SO glad to hear it Tammy!! I was thinking maybe this wasn’t such a great contest after all!! I think the curve is what gave it away. I’ve got a few things in mind for coming months that I hope will be more of a challenge! :)

The “Me” Series | January 2012

One of the things I’d like to do this year is take/or have taken, a photo of myself once a month.  I recently read about some photographers doing this and I thought it was a really great thing to do.  We, as photographers spend all our time behind the camera and we forget about what it’s like to be in FRONT of the lens.  The nerves, self doubt, self-consciousness … the fear!  It’s good to put ourselves in that position every now and again so we don’t lose touch.  But aside from that, I’ll be honest, there aren’t a lot of pictures of me around the house or in print.  What will my kids and grand kids have of me if I don’t hop in front of the camera every now and then?

As for me, I hope to see change over the course of the year.  This year in particular.  2012 is the year of growth for me both personally and in my business.  I’m finally getting down to the business side of my business.   I’ve gotten so much accomplished, streamlined and put-together over the last few weeks.   For the first time in a long time, I feel energized, excited and hopeful for my business.  As far as personal, I just need to start taking care of myself again.  I mean REALLY taking care of myself.  Not just dieting, but eating better, exercising,  setting aside some “me”  time … just putting myself  first for a few minutes everyday.

So, I hope that as the months go by, I will see a transformation not just on the outside, but from the inside out.  I hope to see a less run down, a less emotionally drained, a more energetic and healthy glowing me!    I certainly wouldn’t complain if I shrunk a bit over the months as well.  {{wink, wink}}

So, here’s me today.  January 10, 2012.
